Working Hard or Hardly Working

"The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender."

My dad used to repeat this quote to me often. It feels like such a long time ago sometimes, but once upon a time I loved to compete. I loved to play sports. It was a big part of my childhood and I have a lot of fond memories especially of playing my favorite which was soccer.

But as it does, time moves on and our favorite things have to come to an end at some point.  However, this quote has stuck with me. I consider both of my parents hard workers with strong moral values. Both have made sure their family was taken care of, all the while trying to instill in their children what it means to work hard for what you have and to always do the best job you can do. Not doing just enough to get by but doing as much as you possibly can to ensure it is a job well done.  Is it any wonder that one of my favorite scripture verses is "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Dad & Mom now known as Grandma & Grandpa

Satisfaction of a job well done has always been a huge motivator for me. Being able to sit back after a difficult task and breathe a sigh of relief that it is finished and I left it "all on the field" brings me joy. Now that I have children of my own I want to do the same for them. I want them to know all the money in the world can't buy that feeling. The feeling of I gave it all I had and it was my best, whether it is school, sports, or their faith.

But not only that, I want to teach them the reason for doing things well and to the best of their ability is that it pleases our Father in Heaven. He wants us to glorify him in the way we work. It might look different for each one of us; one might protect the public, one might spend days teaching children, one might spend days in a foreign country learning about different cultures, one might work a trade job, or one might take care of sick people. No matter the job we hold, we do it to the best of our ability because it tells the world we want to be servants of people. We want to be like Jesus and we want to make him proud. I want them to remember nothing you do is done in vain. We don't and can't change the whole world, but we can help one person at a time.

"The harder you work, the hard it is to surrender."

"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." Colossians 3:23

With love,
Tori
