The Exception is Not the Rule
The conversation starts like this,
I'm not the type of person to vent but...
Whether you read it or someone is talking with you face to face, you've probably heard a version of this statement made before. The story to follow usually involves telling another person or people how you were done wrong by either a business, a person, or the world in general. Most of the time there is a valid reason for feeling angry or upset. Something probably did happen that wasn't right, fair, or possibly even just. I mean we can all agree that this world is not sunshine and rainbows all the time. There are things that are going to happen, that are going to be said, that are going to be done to us that leave us feeling less than joyful, but I want to say before you go tell anyone about it remember the exception is not the rule.
Just because you had a bad experience at a restaurant doesn't mean the restaurant is entirely bad and the employee(s) should be fired.
Just because you had a bad experience at a particular store doesn't' mean the store is completely awful and should be closed down.
Just because you had a bad experience with a cop doesn't mean the world is full of corrupt police officers only wanting to cause people misery.
Just because you had a bad experience at a church, doesn't mean everyone who calls them self a Christian is narrow minded and judgmental.
Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean you need to tell the world about it.
It hurts. I get it. It hurts when people are ugly to you. It hurts when people say things that make you so mad you want to cry, shout, and yell. It hurts when people treat you with disrespsect. It hurts when someones words cut through you like a knife. It hurts and we want everyone to know how much it hurts.
But here is the thing. That was one person in a world full of people. One experience in a lifetime full of experiences. The world is not full of all bad. I can attest to it. I live around plenty of people who try their best to follow the golden rule and live a life full of love for their neighbors and their community. I see it on a daily basis. I know it exists.
My challenge for you is when you feel the urge to share the exception, share the rule instead. Share what good is being done, don't share the bad. No one benefits from the bad. Misery loves company, but let's keep better company than that.
With love,
Tori

Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; Romans 12:9-10 NASB
