What on my Plate? Episode 2: Veggie Tots DO NOT taste like Tater Tots

So here we are back again to another episode of What's on my Plate? The last time we spoke I explained how my beloved family began to boycott what is known at quinoa.

Today I would like to share with you about the time I tried to pass off veggie tots as tater tots. If you're wondering, No it did not go well.

It all started when I was walking though the grocery store one day, skimming the freezer section and I spotted something new. I spotted the word veggie and tots on the same bag and I thought hmm, that's interesting.  As a parent, I would try basically anything to get my kids to eat vegetables and tell me they love them, so when I saw this I was like I could be onto something. I had had veggie sticks before, you know the fried sticks that have corn, carrots, and peas in them, the "real healthy" ones, and when I saw veggie tots I was like its probably like tater tots with a a little veggies thrown in so why not, let's give it a shot! The girls love tater tots!

I plan out my meals weekly so it was a few days before Veggie Tots were on the menu.  I don't remember exactly what was for dinner that night with the tots, but I do remember as soon as I started cooking them, not only did Emry come in the kitchen and asked "What smells bad?" but Matt and Isla did too! Evidently, I didn't read the bag very well because they were labeled broccoli and cheese veggie tots. Nowhere in the ingredients did it say there were actual potatoes. I should've know right then and there, this was a bad idea, but sometimes my common sense meter doesn't work.  This incident will attest to that fact. So I just finished preparing dinner, ignoring the comments.

The girls came to the table and took their seats. Emry immediately started plugging her nose, and making yuck sounds under her breath.  We explained like we usually do, you don't have to eat it all but you need to try the different things on your plate. Isla usually goes for the meat first and Emry always goes for the fruit or bread.  Following their usual routine, both got to the point where the only thing left on their plate was the veggie tots. So we kept encouraging them to try one. We used to have the rule if you don't try it, no dessert. Since then we have had to let that rule go because we are trying to cut back on the dessert. But at that point in time, that was our go-to to get them to try veggies and other new foods. Isla is normally one who will just try it and get it over with, but for some reason she's wasn't biting that day. Emry was doing her usual hem-hauling around trying to bide time until we would just give in and tell her she didn't have to eat it.

Since nothing was working Matt decided to play into their sibling rivalry to get them to try one of the tots.  (Don't take parenting advice from us, we make it up as we go along).  He says, "The first one to try a veggie tot wins! We didn't really expect much out of this, but hey it was worth a try.  Now most kids this wouldn't phase, but remember that competitive spirit I have? Well it has transcended upon my oldest daughter, and boy does she have it bad! Especially, when it comes to her little sister.  Before, Matt finished the sentence, Emry popped an entire veggie tot into her mouth and started chewing as fast as she could.  We both looked at her trying not to bust out laughing, and then we noticed the look of absolute disgust on Emry's face. About two seconds later, Emry jumped up from the table and began throwing up in the kitchen trash can. We are all just sitting there watching this whole thing, try to figure out just what exactly happened.  When Emry got done, she's crying because she's thrown up, we are laughing because we can't believe what just happened, and Isla has announced she will NEVER try a veggie tot.

So if anyone asks, Veggie Tots DO NOT taste like Tater Tots.

With love,
Tori
