Commit to It
Water drinkers, I applaud you. I know the Bible says do not envy but I kind of do, maybe just a little. You know who you are, those people who can drink 64 oz. every single day, maybe even more, and actually enjoy it. I long to be you somedays. Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic but I can't tell you how many times, I have begun my water challenge for myself only to last a few days maybe a week. I've tried apps that remind me to drink water, a water bottle labeled with various times so I know how much needs to be drunk so I can stay on track, but each and every time I fail. Eventually I will get the nerve to try again only to go through the same cycle.
Anyone else have trouble committing to something? Ever start something with such gusto knowing that you were going to see it through to the end but then whoops...a speed bump occurs... only to take you off the straight path you were following?
You know what I don't have trouble doing EVERY SINGLE DAY? Checking social media. Why is it so hard for me to commit to something that is truly good for me, but so easy for me to commit to something that really does nothing for my soul or body? I'm sure others can relate. We make time for the bad and skip over the good. Why? I don't know. I would much rather reach my goal of being healthier by drinking water, but to be honest I really dislike the taste and other choices are at my fingertips so why choose something plain and tasteless when I can have something sweet and satisfying?
Because it has to do with eternity. I know you think I'm crazy. What does eternity have to do with drinking 64 oz. of water a day? Well I'll tell you. You see the things in life that are hard to maintain, hard to do, and hard to handle; the things that require self-control and discipline, those things are what you want to hold on to. The hard is so much more rewarding than the easy. When you reach a hard goal and you reap the rewards, you begin to see what it takes to make it through this thing called life.
Living the easy way will only get you to one destination...the roundabout. You will go around and around trying to find the next easy thing to bide your time because the easy way is fast and quick but the results don't last. Once one thing is finished you start another and before you know it, you've accomplished all these things but never really challenged yourself to become better than you are right now. You have a list of many accomplishments, but they don't truly mean anything because they were just a checkoff. Not a true lifestyle change.
Easy doesn't produce perseverance or endurance. Both which are needed to survive and not only survive but enjoy life. Because the first time pain, struggle, or even a little roadblock comes along, the easy road is not longer easy. It becomes hard. Then you don't know how to handle it because you never trained yourself to handle the hard. And one thing is for sure, there will always be hard, not one person can escape the hard times.
Want to know what it takes to make it to eternity? Commitment. How do you get there? Train yourself. Start with one hard thing. Something you struggle committing to completely. Something that you know you want to do, but you shy away from because it's hard. It doesn't have to be spiritual but it can. Set a goal and crush that goal.
Next choose another goal. Commit to it and crush that goal. When it gets hard, tell yourself you can't give up. You must stick with it. Once you have met that goal, choose another one, crush it. Keep going and building upon your goals and truly commit to them and I guarantee, life will become sweeter. Those victories over the hard will really mean something. It will give you an appreciation and a look on life that reminds you, I can survive the hard stuff and I can come out stronger and more focused for the next hard thing no matter what it is. Because handling all the hard stuff the right way will bring you to the finish line with an understanding of what eternity is and why you want to be able to enjoy it.
