We Need People Like Her
Every family has one. The one who speaks their mind, the one who can be hard to handle, the one who does it their way regardless of what others say.
We have one. She's four. Her name is Isla.
Bless this little girl.
Everyday she tests, everyday she pushes, everyday she challenges. I like to lovingly refer to her as strong-willed. I do my best to keep her in check without breaking her spirit.
She was known as "happy girl" until about age 2, then my sweet little baby turned into a testy toddler over night. She has been giving me a run for my money ever since. I'm not going to lie, some days I used to wonder why? Why is she so hard to deal with some days? Did I do something wrong? Why can't she just be "the way I want her to be"?
It's normal (I think) to question your mothering skills when your children are acting up and not listening. Reflecting their shortcomings back on yourself. But the longer I deal with my "strong-willed child", the more I come to the realization that we need people like her.
People like her help change the world. People like her say the things we are afraid to say. People like her make a difference wherever they go because they don't live in fear. People like her get things going. People like her know how to charm the room with their words. People like her have the potential to be the lights this world so desperately needs.
When I realized this, I realized just what my responsibility is as her mom. It's to take this little girl who is full of personality and spirit and help her become a fierce advocate for Jesus. My job is to bring her up in the truth, so when the time comes she is able to use those strong traits that God so graciously provided her with to tell the world about him. It's not my job to change her, it's my job to help mold her. Using what is already there and shaping it.
This little one, she's going to do great things...and I want those great things to be for Jesus.
With love,
Tori
